Vegas Business Roundup

Top Stories
  • The Air Force puts a $1.06 billion build at Nellis out to bid. The Defense Department has issued a further solicitation to industry for construction of support facilities for the Boeing F-47 fighter at Nellis Air Force Base, a project projected at $1.057 billion that could involve as many as four contractors. The current round covers a 116,000-square-foot combined operations and maintenance hangar, a 1.153 million-square-foot aircraft apron with sunshades, a simulator facility and a reprogramming lab, with completion sought by 2031. Contract awards are scheduled for Feb. 5, 2027, and follow-on hangars would begin construction in 2029 for delivery in 2032. Why it matters: This is the largest publicly scheduled construction package in the valley’s pipeline, and it comes with a bid calendar local contractors can work to. — Las Vegas Review-Journal, Oct 26 2026 · The Aviationist, Oct 28 2026

  • Culinary moves to organize Station Casinos after the Supreme Court turns the company away. Chief Justice John Roberts in September denied Station Casinos’ emergency request to stay a federal appeals ruling that enforced a National Labor Relations Board order to bargain with Culinary Local 226, and the union said at an Oct. 27 news conference that it is proceeding with its organizing effort at Red Rock Casino, Boulder Station and Palace Station. Under the court order the company must post NLRB notices at all three properties, including 14 conditions at Red Rock, stemming from a 2019 representation election the board found the company tainted with unfair labor practices. Union secretary-treasurer Ted Pappageorge, joined by Representatives Dina Titus, Steven Horsford and Susie Lee and by Attorney General Aaron Ford, called on the company to begin contract talks. — CDC Gaming, Oct 27 2026 · Nevada Current, Oct 28 2026

  • Barry Diller’s MGM takeover is dead and his stake is capped. MGM Resorts said Oct. 28 it amended its voting agreement with People Inc. and chairman Barry Diller, its largest shareholder, barring them from buying stock that would push their ownership above 29.9%; People holds about 66.8 million shares, roughly 26.5% of the company. People offered $48.30 a share in cash for the rest of MGM on June 1 and withdrew on Sept. 23. On the earnings call, CEO Bill Hornbuckle said the two sides had agreed on a price but People “was unable to assemble a syndicate that met their objective,” adding, “we’re done.” In exchange MGM agreed not to adopt a shareholder rights plan aimed at the pair. Why it matters: The valley’s largest casino operator stays public, and its chairman says the agreement gives the board a clear path to either share buybacks or an eventual sale. — Vegas Inc, Oct 28 2026 · CDC Gaming, Oct 29 2026

  • Las Vegas convention attendance is up nearly 10% this year. Meetings and events attendance in Las Vegas rose nearly 10% year over year through August 2026, Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority chief sales officer Vanessa Claspill said in an interview recorded at IMEX America 2026. Claspill credited new conventions, a push for West Coast trade show business, and the Las Vegas Convention Center’s West Hall and campus improvements for opening capacity to growing shows. — Trade Show News Network, Oct 26 2026

Gaming & Tourism
  • Nevada gaming win was flat in September as room rates fell. The Nevada Gaming Control Board reported the state’s 453 casinos won $1.2 billion in September, a 0.05% decline from a year earlier, while Clark County slipped 0.95% to $1.08 billion. The Las Vegas Strip rose 0.82% to $693.4 million, downtown fell 7.45% to $82.5 million and North Las Vegas gained 9.18% to $25.1 million. The LVCVA put September visitation up 0.2% to nearly 3.1 million, with hotel occupancy at 78.1%, the average daily room rate down 6.3% to $179 and revenue per available room off 6.9% to $139.51. Why it matters: The state collected $81.1 million in percentage fees in October on September revenue, $5.8 million less than a year earlier. — CDC Gaming, Oct 28 2026

  • MGM and Caesars both posted weaker Las Vegas quarters. MGM Resorts reported third-quarter revenue of $4.2 billion, down 1% year over year, with Las Vegas Strip resorts at $2.0 billion, down 2%, and Strip segment adjusted EBITDAR down 12% to $531 million; the company booked a $17 million net loss against a $285 million loss a year earlier. Caesars Entertainment reported a $123 million net loss on revenue of $2.94 billion, below analyst estimates, with revenue from its nine Las Vegas properties down 2.3% to $930 million. Caesars held no earnings call because of its pending $17.6 billion acquisition by Fertitta Entertainment, which will take the company private and delist it from the Nasdaq. — CDC Gaming, Oct 29 2026 · CDC Gaming, Oct 27 2026

  • Grand Prix Plaza sets a January reopening. Formula One’s year-round attraction just off the Strip will reopen Jan. 8, 2027, adding Kids Karts for drivers at least 48 inches tall, an F1-themed indoor playground, and changes to the adult karting track. It is also opening three private event spaces — a 50-person boardroom, a 10-to-30-person suite with two F1 simulators and a 40-person suite — and reopening its Fuel & Fork restaurant with a new menu. Tickets for the 2027 race season go on sale in the coming weeks. — Las Vegas Sun, Oct 31 2026 · Las Vegas Review-Journal, Oct 29 2026

Real Estate & Development
  • Clark County’s median home price fell 5% in the third quarter. The median price of a Clark County home was $428,000 in the third quarter, down from $440,000 in the second quarter and $450,000 a year earlier, a 5% quarterly decline that tied Miami-Dade for the fourth largest among major U.S. metro counties, according to real estate data firm ATTOM. The national metro median was $368,000, down 1% from the prior quarter. ATTOM put Clark County’s average annual wage at $67,678, short of what its model says buying a median-priced home requires. Why it matters: Prices are falling and affordability still is not improving — ATTOM found monthly home costs exceeded typical local wages in 80% of the 583 counties it studied. — Nevada Current, Oct 26 2026

  • A $196 million powered-land deal closes in Apex. A technology-infrastructure developer bought roughly 178 acres in the Apex area of North Las Vegas for $196 million, combining a 30-acre parcel held by Apex Power Industrial with an adjoining 148-acre parcel at U.S. 93 and Apex Power Parkway. API bought its 30 acres about three and a half years ago for $5 million and sold it for $32.5 million within the larger transaction, after two and a half years spent on site planning and securing electrical capacity. The land is deed-restricted against residential use and designated for heavy industrial development. Why it matters: A parcel that cost $5 million sold for $32.5 million once power was attached to it, which is the clearest local price signal yet on what grid capacity is worth in Apex. — Nevada Business Magazine, Oct 26 2026

  • Ovation opens a 190-unit affordable senior community. Ovation Development Corp. held a grand opening for Heirloom at Torrey Pines, a 190-unit affordable senior housing community at 6540 W. Arby Ave., its 19th development for low- and fixed-income seniors. Apartments are limited to seniors earning no more than 50% to 60% of area median income, and the company said the property was nearly 70% occupied months after opening. Ovation says it is the largest private multifamily developer in the valley and has built nearly 10,000 units. — Las Vegas Sun, Oct 25 2026

  • Henderson’s pipeline adds a hotel and a Lakemoor park. The Henderson Planning Commission unanimously approved a conditional use permit and design review at its Oct. 15 meeting for the Horizon West Hotel, a 96-room, four-story, 58,400-square-foot building on about two acres at 3035 St. Rose Pkwy.; developer WTN Investments is in talks with national franchisors and the plans carry SpringHill Suites by Marriott signage. Separately, Pulte Group submitted concept plans reviewed by city staff on Oct. 22 for a 14.41-acre community park in its Lakemoor master plan, with two multipurpose fields, four pickleball courts, a splash pad and 134 parking spaces across two phases, plus an 8,500-square-foot clubhouse. — NVBEX, Oct 30 2026 · NVBEX, Oct 27 2026

Jobs & Workforce
  • Las Vegas unemployment held at 4.8% and still ranks near the bottom of U.S. metros. The Las Vegas-Henderson-North Las Vegas metro area’s unemployment rate was 4.8% in September, down from 5.7% a year earlier but 328th among the 387 metro areas the Bureau of Labor Statistics tracks, with 59,310 people unemployed out of a 1.22 million civilian labor force. The metro added about 20,000 jobs year over year, 11,100 of them in professional and business services, while DETR counted roughly 700 fewer jobs at Las Vegas casino hotels than a year ago and employment on the casino floor flat. — Casino.org, Oct 29 2026

  • Cowabunga Bay closes permanently in Henderson. The water park that had drawn families every summer since 2014 told customers Oct. 28 it will not reopen, ending a 12-year run; the letter posted on its website did not say what prompted the decision. Ownership said the Henderson property will be maintained and secured while it evaluates plans for the site, and that its Summerlin park, Cowabunga Canyon, will operate in the 2027 season. The company has posted a customer FAQ covering 2027 season passes, payment plans, refunds and gift cards. — Las Vegas Sun, Oct 28 2026 · Las Vegas Review-Journal, Oct 26 2026

Airport & Aviation
  • Harry Reid passenger traffic fell for a 20th straight month. The airport served 4,076,634 arriving and departing passengers in September, down 8.4% from 4,451,690 a year earlier, according to Clark County Department of Aviation figures. Domestic traffic fell 9.6% while international volume rose 5.9% to 282,666. Through nine months the airport is down 7.3% to 38,429,929 passengers. Frontier was up 39.5% for the month and United up 0.9%, while Southwest fell 4%, Delta 8.2% and American 0.4%. — CDC Gaming, Oct 30 2026

  • The airport finished a $71 million baggage overhaul. Clark County announced Oct. 23 that a three-year, $71 million upgrade of Harry Reid’s baggage handling system is complete, covering eight upgraded and eight replaced carousels, new conveyors and new carousel columns with LED screens in Terminal 1, and new control hardware and software in Terminal 3. The county said the project was largely paid for with federal grants, including $31 million from the bipartisan infrastructure law’s Airport Terminal Program, and finished on time and within budget. — Las Vegas Sun, Oct 25 2026

Policy & Government
  • The group advertising for NV Energy’s daily demand charge is funded by NV Energy. A political action committee called Nevadans for Reliable, Renewable, Affordable Energy spent just over $93,000 in September airing a television ad promoting the utility’s daily demand charge, drawing 6.4 million impressions, according to ad tracking firm AdImpact. Campaign finance records show the PAC received a combined $170,000 from NV Energy this year and spent the bulk of it with R&R Partners, the utility’s longtime advertising firm. The charge, approved by state regulators, adds a fee based on a customer’s highest 15-minute period of usage each day, and NV Energy says it will lower bills for the roughly 90% of customers without rooftop solar. Why it matters: The same PAC was last this active in 2018, when a ballot question threatened NV Energy’s monopoly. — The Nevada Independent, Oct 30 2026

  • An audit finds $623,000 in uncollected fees at the county Public Administrator’s office. A new audit of the Clark County Public Administrator’s Office, which handles estates when someone dies with no will and no next of kin, found eight high-risk issues: nearly 1,900 open cases, $623,000 in collected fees never handed over to the county, no plan for disposing of human cremated remains, estate checks left uncashed past the point a bank must honor them, and lax security around access to inventory taken from the homes of the deceased. Auditors said they had not received an action plan from the office as of Oct. 22; the audit was finalized at a county audit committee meeting Oct. 28. The office runs on a roughly $2.5 million annual budget with 29 staff. — The Nevada Independent, Oct 28 2026

  • Lawmakers weigh a cannabis tax rewrite as excise revenue slides. Nevada’s cannabis excise tax revenue, which flows into the State Education Fund, peaked in 2021 and had fallen 40% by 2025, which a legislative subcommittee attributed in part to price compression in a maturing market. The retail price of cannabis flower fell from $9.02 a gram in 2019 to $4.46 in 2025, and infused edibles from $19.77 an item to $11.81. The state levies a 15% wholesale tax on fair market value plus a 10% retail excise tax; cultivators argue the fair-market-value formula lags falling prices and overtaxes them, and one proposal would eliminate the wholesale tax and raise the retail rate to replace the revenue. Why it matters: The subcommittee has delivered its final report, so any change to the wholesale formula would reset what every licensed Nevada cultivator owes. — Nevada Current, Oct 27 2026
